Road Widening at Curves through AutoCAD Civil 3D
LaneOutsideSuperWithWidening subassembly inserts a travel lane, applies the Outside Lane superelevation slope value, and widens the pavement at superelevated regions. This subassembly is an extension of LaneOutsideSuper subassembly wherein this subassembly also widens the pavement width in superelevated regions of the corridor.
Length of widening, WL, is computed using Wheelbase length and number of travel lanes. Road widening on entry tangent starts from 0 where the ‘normal crown ends’ and attains WL where the ‘full superelevation’ is achieved. WL remains constant for fully superelevated region. WL diminishes to 0 from ‘end of full super’ to ‘begin of normal crown’ on exit tangent.
I am attaching a result snap shot wherein
wheelbase length = 10m
number of left lanes = 1 ; [computed WL = .22m]
number of right lanes = 2 ; [computed WL = .43m]

AutoCAD Civil 3D and Google Earth
Coming to the point: I set my AutoCAD Civil 3D drawing coordinate system as UTM-WGS 1984 datum, Zone 43 North, Meter; Cent. Meridian 75d E. I imported GE image & surface data in AutoCAD Civil 3D. I drew a straight line alignment across the river Ganga and quickly drew profile view or long[itudinal] section [Image: Rishikesh2.jpg].
Enjoy. Please let me know if come across with good results involving Civil 3D and Google Earth.

Autodesk inclusion in Dow Jones Sustainability Index
Sustainable design is the intersection of sustainability and design innovation. Sustainable design integrates, analyzes and optimizes environmental, social, and economic factors at each step of the design and builds process. It is design that contributes to making the world a better place for future generations.
Autodesk focuses its sustainability strategy around four central ideas:
1. Being a responsible business
2. Optimizing the environmental impacts of our operations
3. Enabling sustainable design with our products
4. Partnering with innovators to boost awareness and adoption of sustainable design

About HEC RAS & AutoCAD Civil 3D
About AutoCAD Civil 3D
AutoCAD Civil 3D software provides a better surveying, design, analysis and documentation solution for civil engineering, including land development, transportation and environmental projects.
About HEC-RAS
HEC RAS stands for Hydrologic Engineering Center’s River Analysis System. HEC-RAS performs 1-D analysis for
1. steady flow water surface profile computations
The system can handle a full network of channels, a dendritic system [a main river with tributaries with their own tributaries.], or a single river reach. The steady flow component is capable of modeling subcritical, supercritical, and mixed flow regimes water surface profiles.
Computations are used for multiple plan analyses; multiple profile computations; multiple bridge and/or culvert opening analyses; and split flow optimization.
2. unsteady flow simulation
it does 1D unsteady flow simulation for flow through a full network of open channels.
Simulation is used for dam break analysis; levee breaching and overtopping; Pumping stations; navigation dam operations; and pressurized pipe systems.
3. movable boundary sediment transport computations
it does 1-D sediment transport/movable boundary calculations resulting from scour and deposition over moderate time periods.
The model is designed to simulate long-term trends of scour and deposition in a stream channel that might result from modifying the frequency and duration of the water discharge and stage, or modifying the channel geometry. This system can be used to evaluate deposition in reservoirs, design channel contractions required to maintain navigation depths, predict the influence of dredging on the rate of deposition, estimate maximum possible scour during large flood events, and evaluate sedimentation in fixed channels.
4. water quality analysis
This component of the modeling system is intended to allow the user to perform riverine water quality analyses. The available water quality constituents are: Dissolved Nitrogen (NO3-N, NO2-N, NH4-N, and Org-N); Dissolved Phosphorus (PO4-P and Org-P); Algae; Dissolved Oxygen (DO); and Carbonaceous Biological Oxygen Demand (CBOD).
About Dendritic System!
In a dendritic system there is one main river (like the trunk of a tree), which is joined and formed by many smaller tributary rivers.

Autodesk, Ambercore & Point Clouds
Point clouds are extremely large data files usually created through the use of laser scanning, high definition surveying, or LIDAR (Light Detection and Ranging). They provide a more accurate representation of existing conditions whether of a terrain surface or urban center, a roadway or bridge, or the interior/exterior of a building.
AEC customers will experience the power of Building Information Modeling (BIM) earlier in the project lifecycle. By providing the capability to incorporate highly accurate LIDAR data into the design process, we will provide a foundation for creating more accurate designs faster. This will be particularly beneficial to our civil engineering customers involved in road and highway design.

Google Image Marker Visibility!
Once the GE data is imported, there comes a symbol by default. Even if google image or surface is deleted or hidden, symbol remains there and it becomes a sour in ones eye.

voila symbol is gone... its hidden now.
Enjoy...

AutoCAD Civil 3D 2009 waiting to be Exploited
AutoCAD Civil 3D 2009 is out in the market and igniting fancies among the civil community. New Civil 3D has added tools for sustainable design, a trend which has taken off in recent time.
Criteria based design for alignment & profile will help roads/highways engineers to check their design in the beginning itself. Surface simplification will enable efficient use of large surfaces without sacrificing data accuracy. Generalization of target to one or more feature lines, survey figures or polylines in Corridor modeling is JUST COOOOL. There are many more powerful features which are waiting to be exploited by you. Have a glimpse of some of the features at http://download.autodesk.com/us/interactiveoverviews/demo/civil3d2009_nfw/index.html
In next post I will be taking topic on Hydraulics & Hydrology (or vice versa, I don't know). Just be aware of the fact that there will be three new extensions available with the release of Civil 3D 2009. These extensions are Hydraflow Storm Sewers, Hydraflow Hydrographs and Hydraflow Express. These extensions offer numerous H&H capabilities.
I expect you will be loving new AutoCAD Civil 3D 2009.

AutoCAD Civil 3D 2008 Awarded A+
GOOD NEWS
Cadalyst has rated Civil 3D 2008 as A+ and considered as a highly recommended product in Mar 1, 2008 issue. It’s encouraging to note that industry pundits are taking Civil 3D seriously, testing it rigorously and giving positive reviews.
Visit http://aec.cadalyst.com/aec/Review,%20AEC%20Software/AutoCAD-Civil-3D-2008-Cadalyst-Labs-Review/ArticleStandard/Article/detail/499971?contextCategoryId=42386 for detailed report.
Quick turnaround time for implementing changes through its dynamic modeling approach is something which makes AutoCAD Civil 3D unique. In today's world, when everybody is speaking high on sustainable design, Civil 3D actually offers intelligence to stakeholders by giving them chance to evaluate design options.
Civil 3D is a futuristic software worth exploiting.
